Amsterdam -- The 124th AES Committee has dedicated a significant portion of the technical program for AES Amsterdam to the broadcast audio field. Workshops such as Spatial Audio and Sound Design In Sports and Loudness A Change of Paradigms will discuss new practices in audio for HDTV and broadcast audio levels. Several paper presentations and tutorials will outline and discuss current standards and innovations that impact broadcast audio professionals. Go to www.aes.org/events/124/program for the complete technical program, and take a look at some highlights below.
On Sunday, May 18, from 1:30-3pm, a tutorial on Current Standards of File-Interchange Formats will discuss the current formats audio professionals will encounter as the broadcasting world switches to file-based production. Presenter Mike Yonge is the AES Standards Manager, and will share his intimate insights into file formats.
On Monday, May 19, from 9:30-11am, Eirik Solheim of NRK in Oslo and Karl Petermichl of ORF Radio will lead a workshop on New Distribution Channels in Broacasting. This workshop will address the future role of broadcasters and high-quality content in this age of online video sharing via YouTube and social networks like Myspace.
Also on Monday, from 11:30-2pm, Florian Camerer, of ORF Vienna, Gaute Nistove, of NRK in Oslo, and Teemu Tanskanen, of YLE in Helsinki, will lead a workshop called Broadcast Case Studies of Productions Made in Challenging Circumstances. Each of the presenting sound engineers will offer an in-depth look at specific large-scale audio productions, including the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki, and the New Year's Concert 2008 in Vienna.
Additionally, the schedule of Technical Tours to facilities in and around Amsterdam includes trips to the Philips Research Laboratories, Technicolor Netherlands, and Vision & Sound Experience, the new national archive of the Dutch Radio and Television broadcast. Technical Tours are made available on a first come, first served basis, and tickets can be purchased during normal registration hours at the convention center.
