AES Packs Program For Amsterdam

Amsterdam -- The technical program devised by the 124th AES Committee truly represents the variety of occupations, fields of interest and relevant issues in audio today. Live sound, recording, broadcast and post-production audio engineers, as well as equipment designers and all-around audio innovators and enthusiasts will find the program concentrated with events and workshops on topics of current interest in their respective fields. Audiologist and professor Tammo Hougast will deliver the 124th AES Convention's keynote address--"Speech Reception in Noise: A Review From A Personal Perspective"--at the opening ceremonies on Saturday May 17. A.J. (Guus) Berkhout, Professor of Innovation at Delft University of Technology (TU), will give this year's Heyser Lecture on Sunday evening, from 6-7:30pm. On Sunday at 11:00am, the Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick will discuss his recent work re-recording Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, using the same equipment and techniques he employed in the original recording, with performances by contemporary artists such as the Kaiser Chiefs, The Fray, and Travis.

In addition to the special events, a full schedule of workshops has been planned for the four-day Convention, including Saturday's workshops on "Recording Studio Design" and "Trends of Storage Technologies For Audio Recording and Mastering," Sunday's "Uneven Bass Reproduction In Automobiles" and "Creating A Music Download Website," and Monday's "Bringing Dynamics Back Into The Mix." Tuesday's workshops include "SOS: Save Our Spectrum," which will discuss the sell-out of the UHF radio spectrum and the threats it poses to the broadcast and overall audio industries, and "10 Things To Get Right in PA and Sound Reinforcement," which will provide a practical approach to sound systems design and operation.

Tutorials will be held each day as well, and will cover a wide range of topics, including "Digital Audio Signals, Filters and Equalizers," "Quantization Effects in Audio Signal Processing," and "The Game Audio Process."

"The topics range from papers about acoustics to a workshop dealing with Yesterdays FX's today," offers Roger Furness, executive director of the AES. "Or, from a tutorial on archiving to a live sound seminar addressing the different types of mixing consoles. Audio networking, file-based production and, of course, surround sound recordings are other important subjects in our Convention program."

Student events planned for AES Amsterdam include the Student Delegate Assembly, Education and Job Fairs, Recording Competition-both stereo and surround, Design Competition, Mentoring Sessions and Education Forum Panel.
