DK's new MSD100C Loudness meter is a stand-alone unit that incorporates ITU Recommendations BS.1770 and BS.1771, which specify the algorithms that should be used to measure audio program loudness. The MSD100C displays the loudness of the individual audio channels, as well as the sum of the left and right signals, and can be used in any broadcast or post production facility as a "health check" during production or prior to transmission.
The MSD100C unit reportedly provides accurate loudness matching of audio from a number of different sources and offers a selection of working modes, including "Fast" mode for real time viewing of loudness, "Integrated" mode for measuring the loudness of a recorded section or the complete recording and "Gated" mode for viewing loudness of audio material with long pauses. The MSD100C Loudness accommodates a variety of languages and can be delivered with different scales to suit different broadcasters, while still maintaining the consistent loudness measurement as set out by the ITU.
Also on display at AES will be DK-Technologies' new 5.1 software upgrades for its MSD Series of high-end audio meters-the MSD600M++, PT0600M, PT0660M and PT0660M-LS. The new software is reportedly loaded with useful features to help professionals improve audio quality for surround sound, stereo and mono. One such feature is the new StarFish display, which--based on the company's JellyFish display--allows users to see an image of acoustic audio levels representing what listeners are hearing in surround sound.
DK's MSD 600M++ audio meter also now incorporates BSkyB's BLITS 5.1 surround sound test tone sequence. The BLITS 5.1 test tone sequence, developed by BSkyB to provide a source identification tone sequence for its HDTV broadcasts with associated 5.1 surround sound, is also available as a software upgrade to existing MSD600M++ users.
